Coffee Hour after worship social time. Coffee Hosts make coffee, bring treats, set-up, serve and clean-up for this weekly fellowship opportunity. It's an important part of keeping members connected and welcoming visitors. A Host can volunteer for just one service, or for both on a two service Sunday. Thank you for volunteering for this critical part of our ministry.
Getting Started
What to bring: some treats to share is always a nice addition to the drinks offered at coffee hour. Ideas include: small cookies, donut holes, fresh finger fruit like strawberries, grapes, watermelon wedges. You can expect attendance of:
65 at the 8:45 service,
85 at the 10:45 service,
120 for One Summer Worship
150 for special services (like Children’s Sunday).
Sometimes there are special events after the 9:45 service in which either cakes or special desserts are provided. If this is the case, you will be notified and only need to make the coffee and juice and to set up and clean-up.
Set-up: The wood cart with cups and supplies is located in front of the interior kitchen window and should be moved out under the awning in front of the church. Set up all the supplies, coffee cups, paper cups, sugar, creamer, spoons, and napkins.
Most supplies are in the cart; however, additional supplies are located in the kitchen (directly below the coffee pot for coffee and filters, wall cabinet on the left OR under the cutting board on the pantry side of the room for juice, cups, tea bags, sweetners, etc).
Place a kitchen wastebasket next to the cart for trash.
Bring a gray bin to collect dirty cups if you will be washing dishes (not required, you may stick to paper).
Also pour cups of apple juice (located in the refrigerator or the cupboard). There are usually many children at the 8:45 service and just a few at the 10:45.
Indoor Coffee Hour: In the event that it is raining or too cold, Coffee Hour will be held in the Fellowship Hall. Place the sign directing people to the Fellowship Hall outside the exterior doors of the church. The sign should be located in the coat closet area near the toilets.
Making Coffee & Tea
Set-up & Brew Time is approximately 20 min. First service ends around 9:45am, second at 11:45, One Special at approximately 11:00am
Coffee quantities:
For 8:45 service, start with a 2 pots of regular and 1 pot of Decaf.
10:45 – check to see if pots are light. You will generally need at least 1-2 more pots of regular.
One worship at 9:45 – you will probably need 2-3 pots of regular and 1-2 of Decaf, depending on the time of year. Less in summer. More for special worship during the school year. In summer, consider making less coffee and adding a pitcher of cold water or ice tea.
Making Coffee:
There are pre-measured bags of coffee, and filters, in the cupboard below and next to the coffee machine (just left of the dishwasher).
A new filter is needed for each pot. Place filter in metal basket. Empty one packet of coffee grounds. Slide metal basket back into place.
Once filter and coffee are in place, turn the burner “on” and press “Start”. The machine takes approx 7 min to brew each pot. You can make two pots at one time.
Decafpots haveorange handles. You may need to make more pots as needed.
Regular coffee cups are located in the in the kitchen cabinets. Only paper cups are on the cart and more are in the kitchen.
Hot Tea: Use the pump dispenser marked for hot water. Fill one half-full with hot water from the red lever on the top left of the coffee machine. Be careful! The water comes out scalding.
Juice & water: We like to offer some cold drinks as well for the children and non-coffee drinkers. Apple juice is located in the kitchen refrigerator for this purpose. You are welcome to make a pitcher of water. This is especially nice on hot days. Pitchers are in the cabinet to the right of the sink. Sometimes there will be iced tea or lemonade in the refrigerator left over from an event. Feel free to offer these as well.
Clean up
8:45 Clean-up: The first coffee hour is over when everyone has gone in for the 10:45 service. Leave everything set up for the next coffee hour. If you used mugs, please wash them after your service. Either hand wash and put away coffee cups or put them in the dishwasher, running it when you are finished. (Instructions are one the dishwasher and the coffee cabinet). Empty the garbage cans into the dumpster at the back of our property and reline the cans with garbage bags found next to the microwave in the kitchen. Please restock the cart with clean supplies.
9:45 or 10:45 Clean-up: Please wash the cups after your service. Either hand wash and put away coffee cups or put them in the dishwasher, running it when you are finished. Empty and rinse the coffee pots and carafes used. Empty the garbage cans into the dumpster at the back of our property and reline the cans with garbage bags found next to the microwave in the kitchen. Please restock the cart with clean supplies and return it to the Fellowship Hall when finished.
You can also note any coffee supplies that are running low on the pre-printed sheets located in the lower left bin of the coffee cart so Britta can replenish them. Place the supply notes under the office door or hand too a staff member.
Thank you for your willingness to serve coffee, greet visitors and host this important fellowship time! If you have any questions, please call your coffee captain or ask a staff member
