Prince of Peace is actively involved in 3 Walks/Fundraisers: Crop Walk, Relay for Life and the ALS Walk.
DIG is a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to improve the health and well-being of HIV-positive and other at-risk individuals in developing nations. We do this by teaching the skills and providing the infrastructure to create sustainable community gardens, thereby empowering people to improve both their nutrition and earning potential.
Each year Prince of Peace has a fund raising drive to support the Heifer program. Heifer attempts to end world hunger and lift people out of poverty by providing animals, training and creating a culture in order to make communities self sustainable.
The Lutheran Volunteer Corps is a year-long service program for people 21 and over seeking to unite faith, social justice, community living, and simplicity. Volunteers are matched with non-profit organizations in ten metropolitan areas across the United States. They work full-time in various positions ranging from direct social services, to political advocacy, community organizing, education, and activism while living in intentional community.
Incorporated in 1965 as a non-profit religious organization, Youth Encounter is an evangelical and confessional Christian organization that began by sending a music ministry team to Scandinavia. Rooted in the Christian Scriptures and shaped by the Lutheran tradition, Youth Encounter has now grown into a global ministry serving churches of many denominations in the United States and over 40 other countries.
Kindred is an International Team sponsored by Youth Encounter. This group of young adults ministers throughout the United States, Peru, and Bolivia for one year with a faith-encouraging program of music, testimonies, drama and puppetry to inspire people of all ages! The Kindred group comes to Prince of Peace each summer to help us with the vacation summer Bible school. PoP families have an opportunity to host these young adults during their stay with us.
A growing area of ministry at Prince of Peace is concern for the stewardship of God's beautiful creation. We are building on a strong response to the viewing at our congregation last fall of Al Gore's movie, "An Inconvenient Truth." Work is underway to plan special community events on Earth Day, April 22, 2007. Together with the Council of Churches and other congregations in the community, we hope to build a stronger coalition of people concerned about the environment.
Check the Council's website: www.councilofchurches-scc.org for current planning information. We are also starting a "green audit" of our congregation's conservation practices.
